Adam

Adam was the first man, created by God at the beginning of the world. His story begins during the creation week, on the sixth day. God formed Adam from the dust of the ground and gave him life. God made him in his own image, with a special purpose and the ability to know and obey his Creator. Adam was given responsibility for the earth and its creatures. He named the animals, but none of them was a suitable companion for him. God then made Eve to be his wife. Together they were the first human family.

The story of Adam is found mainly in Genesis chapters 1 through 5. God placed Adam in the beautiful garden of Eden, where trees grew and rivers flowed. Adam could eat from every tree except one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A serpent tempted Eve to doubt God’s command. She ate the forbidden fruit and gave some to Adam, who also ate. Their disobedience brought sin, shame, suffering, and death into human life. Adam and Eve tried to hide, but God called them to account. He gave them clothing and sent them out of the garden so they could not eat from the tree of life. Even in this sad moment, God spoke of a future offspring who would defeat the serpent.

Adam’s story matters because it teaches children that every person is made by God and has value. It also shows that God’s instructions are good, while wrong choices can hurt us and others. Children can learn to tell the truth, accept responsibility, and trust God’s mercy when they fail. The Bible does not tell us exactly where the garden of Eden was, though Genesis chapter 2 connects it with four rivers. After leaving the garden, Adam and Eve became parents. Their sons included Cain, Abel, and Seth. Genesis chapter 5 traces Adam’s family through Seth, showing how the human family continued after Eden.
