Daniel

Daniel was a young Jewish man who was taken from Jerusalem to Babylon after King Nebuchadnezzar conquered his homeland. He lived far from his family’s land and was trained to serve foreign kings. Daniel became known for wisdom, honesty, prayer, and faithfulness to God. Many years later, after the Persian Empire took control of Babylon, Daniel served under Darius the Mede, around 535 BCE. Although rulers and kingdoms changed, Daniel continued to worship the God of Israel. He trusted that God was with him, even in a place where many people followed other gods.

Daniel’s story is told in the Book of Daniel. Chapter 1 describes his arrival in Babylon and his choice to remain faithful in what he ate and how he lived. Chapter 6 tells the famous story of the lions’ den. Darius placed Daniel in a position of great authority because he was trustworthy. Jealous officials could find no wrongdoing in him, so they used his prayers against him. They persuaded the king to make a law that no one could pray to any god or person except the king for thirty days. Daniel still prayed to God three times each day. He did not hide his faith, and he did not rebel or harm anyone. The officials caught him praying, and Darius sadly ordered Daniel to be placed in a den of lions. God sent an angel to keep the lions from hurting him. At dawn, the worried king found Daniel alive and brought him safely out.

Daniel’s courage shows children that faithfulness matters when choices are difficult. He prayed regularly, did his work honestly, and trusted God when he could not control what happened next. His story does not promise that doing right will always feel easy. It teaches that God sees his people and remains worthy of trust. Ancient Babylon stood near the modern city of Hillah in Iraq. Susa, another important Persian royal city connected with Daniel’s later visions, was in what is now Iran. After the lions’ den, Daniel continued to prosper during the reigns of Darius and Cyrus, and his book records visions about God’s rule over future kingdoms.
