Naomi

Naomi was an Israelite woman from Bethlehem in Judah, in the hill country south of Jerusalem. She lived during the time of the Judges, probably in the early Iron Age around 1100 BCE. Naomi was married to Elimelech and had two sons, Mahlon and Chilion. When famine struck the land, the family moved east to Moab in search of food. There, Naomi became the mother-in-law of two Moabite women, Ruth and Orpah. Naomi’s story is about deep loss, faithful love, and the way hope returned to her life.

The story is told in the book of Ruth, chapters 1 through 4. In Moab, Elimelech died. Later, Naomi’s two sons also died. Heartbroken, Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem. Orpah stayed in Moab, but Ruth lovingly chose to go with Naomi and worship Naomi’s God. They arrived in Bethlehem as the barley harvest began. Ruth gathered leftover grain in the fields so they would have food. She happened to work in a field belonging to Boaz, a kind and honorable relative of Elimelech. Boaz protected Ruth, provided grain, and learned of her loyalty to Naomi. Following the customs of their people, Boaz became the family’s guardian-redeemer. He married Ruth and helped preserve the family line and property. When Ruth gave birth to a son named Obed, the women of Bethlehem celebrated with Naomi. The woman who had returned feeling empty now held a child and shared in a restored family.

Naomi’s life helps children understand that sadness and faith can exist together. She did not hide her grief, yet she kept moving toward home and remained part of God’s people. Ruth’s loyalty, Boaz’s kindness, and the care of the Bethlehem community show how God can bring comfort through ordinary people. Bethlehem was a small farming town where barley and wheat were harvested. What happened next was important: Obed became the father of Jesse and the grandfather of King David, as recorded in Ruth 4. Many generations later, Jesus was also born in Bethlehem, and Ruth appears in his family line in Matthew 1.
