Ruth

Ruth was a woman from Moab who lived during the time of the Judges, around 1100 BCE. After marrying into an Israelite family, she lost her husband. Her mother-in-law, Naomi, also lost her husband and her two sons. Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem in the hill country of Judah. Ruth chose to go with her instead of remaining in Moab. She promised to stay with Naomi and to worship Naomi’s God. Ruth arrived in Bethlehem as a poor foreign widow, but her courage and loyalty opened a new chapter in God’s plan.

Ruth’s story is found in the Book of Ruth, chapters 1 through 4. To find food, Ruth went into the fields during the barley harvest. Israelite law allowed poor people and foreigners to gather grain left behind by harvesters. This was called gleaning. Ruth happened to work in a field belonging to Boaz, a respected relative of Naomi’s late husband. Boaz heard about Ruth’s kindness to Naomi. He protected her, welcomed her, and told his workers to leave extra grain for her. Naomi realized that Boaz could act as a family-redeemer. Such a relative could help preserve a family’s land and future. Following Naomi’s careful instructions, Ruth asked Boaz for his protection. Boaz agreed, but first he respectfully settled the matter with a closer relative at the town gate. Then Boaz married Ruth, and God gave them a son named Obed.

Ruth’s story shows children that faithfulness, kindness, and brave love matter to God. Ruth cared for Naomi when life was hard. Boaz used his strength and resources to protect someone vulnerable. God worked through their ordinary choices to bring hope after deep sadness. Bethlehem, where Ruth gleaned and began her new family, later became known as the City of David. Obed became the father of Jesse and the grandfather of King David, as recorded in Ruth 4. Ruth is also named in the family line of Jesus in Matthew 1. Her life reminds us that God welcomes people from every nation and can weave faithful acts into a much bigger story.
