Saul

Saul, later known as the apostle Paul, was a Jewish teacher who lived in the first century AD, during the time of the Roman Empire. He was born in Tarsus and trained as a Pharisee, someone who studied the Jewish law very carefully. Saul was not the same person as King Saul, who ruled Israel about a thousand years earlier. At first, Saul strongly opposed the followers of Jesus. He believed they were teaching something dangerous, so he helped arrest and punish them. Yet Jesus chose Saul for a surprising new purpose. After Saul became a believer, he traveled widely and told both Jews and Gentiles that Jesus is the promised Savior.

Saul’s change began while he was traveling to Damascus to arrest Christians. The story is told in Acts 7 through 9, with Saul later retelling it in Acts 22 and 26. A bright light from heaven suddenly flashed around him, and he fell to the ground. Jesus spoke to Saul and showed him that by hurting Christians, Saul was opposing Jesus himself. Saul could not see for three days. His companions led him into Damascus, where he waited and prayed. Then God sent a disciple named Ananias to him. Although Ananias knew Saul’s frightening reputation, he obeyed. He welcomed Saul, prayed for him, and Saul could see again. Saul was baptized and soon began teaching that Jesus is the Son of God. In Acts 13, the Bible begins calling him Paul as his missionary work among Gentiles comes into focus.

Saul’s story shows children that no one is beyond God’s mercy and that God can completely redirect a life. It also teaches courage. Ananias obeyed even when he was afraid, and Paul kept sharing the good news through danger, rejection, prison, and shipwreck. After leaving Damascus, Paul spent time in places such as Jerusalem and Antioch. He later made long journeys through Asia Minor and Greece, helping churches grow. His final years took him to Rome as a prisoner. Many New Testament letters bear Paul’s name, including Romans, Galatians, and Philippians. His life reminds children that forgiveness can lead to a new beginning and that God can use changed people to bring hope to others.
