Stephen

Stephen was one of the first leaders in the church after Jesus returned to heaven. He lived in Jerusalem during the late Second Temple period, around AD 34. Stephen was known for his faith, wisdom, and the power of the Holy Spirit. The apostles chose him and six other men to help make sure needy widows received food fairly. This practical work mattered because the young church included people from different languages and backgrounds. Stephen also taught about Jesus and performed remarkable signs. He is remembered as the first Christian martyr, which means he was the first follower of Jesus recorded in Scripture to be killed for his faithful witness.

Stephen’s story is found in the book of Acts, especially chapters 6 and 7. Some men argued with him, but they could not overcome his Spirit-given wisdom. They stirred up false accusations and brought him before the Jewish council. Stephen answered by retelling Israel’s history, from Abraham and Joseph to Moses, the tabernacle, and the temple. He explained that God’s messengers had often been rejected. His listeners became furious. Stephen looked toward heaven and said that he could see Jesus standing beside God. The crowd rushed at him, dragged him outside the city, and threw stones at him. A young man named Saul watched the coats of those taking part. As Stephen died, he trusted Jesus to receive him. He also asked that his killers be forgiven. His final prayer showed courage, mercy, and a heart shaped by Jesus.

Stephen’s story teaches children that courage does not mean never feeling afraid. It means trusting God and choosing what is right, even when others are unkind or angry. Stephen also shows that forgiveness is powerful. He did not answer hatred with hatred. His death happened outside Jerusalem, and the account continues in Acts chapter 8. Afterward, persecution caused many believers to scatter through Judea and Samaria, where they shared the good news about Jesus. Saul later met Jesus on the road to Damascus and became a great missionary. God used even this painful time to spread hope to many people.
