Preschool & Kindergarten

Ages 4–6

Objective

Children will understand that God helped Elisha continue the work Elijah had taught him to do.

Tell the story

Read 2 Kings 2:1-15 together. Elisha stayed close to Elijah as they walked to the Jordan River. God opened the water, and later a fiery chariot appeared while a whirlwind carried Elijah into heaven. Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak, and God helped him cross the river and continue Elijah’s work.

Hands-on activities

Cross the Jordan

Materials: Two blue towels or sheets of blue paper, A scarf or small towel

  1. Lay the blue pieces beside each other as a river.
  2. Roll up the scarf like Elijah’s mantle.
  3. Tap the space between the blue pieces.
  4. Pull the blue pieces apart.
  5. Walk through the dry path together.
  6. Say, “God helped Elisha.”

  1. Look at our free printable coloring page together.
  2. Find Elijah, Elisha, the fire, and the cloak.
  3. Color the fiery chariot with bright colors.
  4. Color the cloak while saying, “Elisha picked it up.”
  5. Draw a heart near Elisha to show that God was with him.

Talk about it

  1. Why did Elisha stay with Elijah?
  2. What fell from Elijah when he was taken to heaven?
  3. Who helped Elisha do his new work?

Early Elementary

Ages 6–9

Objective

Children will explain how Elijah passed on his calling and identify one way they can learn from a faithful mentor.

Opening question

Who has taught you something important that you can now do yourself?

Tell the story

Read 2 Kings 2:1-15 together. Elisha refused to leave Elijah and followed him to the Jordan, where Elijah struck the water with his mantle and both crossed on dry ground. Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit, showing that he wanted to carry on the prophetic calling. After Elijah went into heaven, Elisha picked up the mantle, struck the Jordan, and crossed with God’s help.

Hands-on activities

Pass the Mantle Story Drama

Materials: A scarf, Two strips of blue paper or two blue towels

  1. Choose children to play Elijah and Elisha.
  2. Place the blue pieces together as the Jordan River.
  3. Act out the journey while everyone walks in place.
  4. Roll the scarf and pretend to strike the water.
  5. Separate the blue pieces and cross between them.
  6. Drop the scarf for Elisha to pick up.
  7. Repeat the crossing with Elisha holding the scarf.
  8. Explain that God’s power, not the scarf, divided the water.

  2. Circle the mantle that Elisha picked up.
  3. Write one lesson a trusted Christian has taught you.

Objective

Students will connect Elisha’s succession to their own responsibility to receive wise teaching and courageously serve when mentors are absent.

Opening question

How would you respond if someone you depended on left and you had to continue without them?

Tell the story

Read 2 Kings 2:1-15 together. Elisha stayed with Elijah through repeated invitations to remain behind, then watched Elijah divide the Jordan with his mantle. Elisha asked for a double portion, language connected to an heir’s share and his desire to continue Elijah’s prophetic calling. A fiery chariot separated them, Elijah went into heaven by a whirlwind, and the mantle fell. Grieving but resolved, Elisha picked it up, returned to the Jordan, and learned that Elijah’s God was still present and powerful.

Materials: Paper, Pens or pencils

  1. Fold the paper into three sections.
  2. Label the sections Learned, Practicing, and Passing On.
  3. Write one wise truth or skill someone has taught you.
  4. Describe how you can practice it at school, home, or church.
  5. Name a younger person or friend you could encourage.
  6. Share only what feels comfortable.
  7. Pray for courage to act on one idea this week.

  2. Color the fire and whirlwind with strong contrasts.
  3. Mark the place where Elisha must choose what to do next.
  4. Write a thought Elisha may have felt without adding it to Scripture.
  5. Add the sentence, “God is still with me when…”
  6. Share how the mantle represented calling rather than magic.

  1. Why might Elisha have felt both grief and responsibility after Elijah left?
  2. What is the difference between copying a mentor and continuing a godly calling?
  3. Where do you need courage to obey God without a trusted person beside you?
