Preschool & Kindergarten

Ages 4–6

Objective

Children will understand that God made the world on purpose, made people special, and gave us rest.

Opening question

What is your favorite thing that God made?

Tell the story

In the beginning, God made the heavens and the earth. God spoke, and light, sky, seas, land, plants, sun, moon, stars, fish, birds, and animals appeared. God made Adam and Eve in his image, and everything he made was very good. On the seventh day, God rested.

Hands-on activities

Creation Movement Game

Materials: Open floor space, A lamp or flashlight

  1. Read Genesis 1:1 to 2:3 together.
  2. Dim the room and say, “Let there be light,” as you turn on the light.
  3. Stretch high for the sky and wave low for the sea.
  4. Crouch like plants, fly like birds, swim like fish, and walk like animals.
  5. Stand tall and say, “God made people special.”
  6. Sit quietly to remember that God rested.

Color God's Good World

Materials: Our free printable coloring page, Crayons

  1. Give each child our free printable coloring page.
  2. Name the things God made as children color.
  3. Invite children to point to one part they especially enjoy.
  4. Say together, “Thank you, God, for your good world.”

Talk about it

  1. Who made the world?
  2. What did God say about everything he made?
  3. How can we care for God's world?

Closing prayer

God, we thank you for making us and your wonderful world.

Early Elementary

Ages 6–9

Objective

Children will explain that God created an ordered, good world and made people in his image to know him and care for creation.

Opening question

If you could explore any part of creation, where would you go?

Tell the story

Genesis begins with darkness over a formless world, but God's Spirit was there. God spoke and formed light, sky, sea, land, plants, heavenly lights, fish, birds, and land animals. God made Adam and Eve in his image and gave people a special place in his good world. After six days of creating, God rested on the seventh day.

Hands-on activities

Act Out the Creation Days

Materials: Seven sheets of paper, Crayons, Tape

  1. Read Genesis 1:1 to 2:3 together.
  2. Write one day on each sheet of paper.
  3. Draw what God made on each day.
  4. Tape the sheets around the room in order.
  5. Walk from sheet to sheet and act out each part of creation.
  6. Pause at the seventh sheet and rest quietly.

Creation Color Search

Materials: Our free printable coloring page, Crayons or colored pencils

  1. Give each child our free printable coloring page.
  2. Color several different parts of creation.
  3. Circle one thing that shows beauty and one thing that shows order.
  4. Share why those parts are good gifts.
  5. Add a small drawing of one way people can care for creation.

Talk about it

  1. What does creation show us about God?
  2. What might it mean that people are made in God's image?
  3. Why do you think God included rest in creation's rhythm?

God, we praise you for your good creation and ask you to help us care for it.

Upper Elementary & Preteen

Ages 9–12

Objective

Children will connect creation, human dignity, caring for the earth, and healthy rest with choices they make each day.

Opening question

How would your choices change if you saw the world and every person as God's valued creation?

Tell the story

Genesis 1 presents God bringing light and order into a dark, formless world through his word. God fills creation with plants, lights, sea creatures, birds, animals, and people. Adam and Eve are made in God's image, giving human life special dignity and responsibility within creation. God calls the completed world very good and rests on the seventh day.

Hands-on activities

Image of God Scenarios

Materials: Scrap paper, Pencils, A bowl

  1. Read Genesis 1:1 to 2:3 together.
  2. Write school or friendship situations in which someone may be ignored, mocked, or treated unfairly.
  3. Fold the papers and place them in a bowl.
  4. Draw one situation at a time.
  5. Act out an unkind response and then a response that honors the person as made in God's image.
  6. Discuss which response reflects God's good purposes.

  1. Study our free printable coloring page before coloring.
  2. Choose colors that highlight the variety and order of creation.
  3. Write one question you have about God or creation beside the picture.
  4. Write one practical way you can care for people, animals, or the earth this week.
  5. Share your plan with a partner.
  6. Choose one section to leave quiet and simple as a reminder to rest.

Talk about it

  1. Why does being made in God's image give every person value?
  2. How can we respond when scientific questions or doubts about creation feel difficult?
  3. What keeps us from receiving rest as a good gift from God?
