Objective

Children will understand that Joseph chose love and forgiveness when his brothers were sorry and afraid.

Opening question

How do you feel when someone who hurt you says they are sorry?

Tell the story

Read Genesis 42:1-45:28 together. Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt for food and bowed before Joseph, but they did not know him. Joseph waited, watched their choices, and saw Judah offer to protect Benjamin. Then Joseph told them who he was, wept with them, forgave them, and sent food and wagons for their family.

Hands-on activities

Materials: our free printable coloring page, crayons, small pieces of blue paper, glue

  1. Look at our free printable coloring page and find Joseph and his family.
  2. Color the people and talk about how each person may feel.
  3. Tear the blue paper into tiny teardrops.
  4. Glue happy tears near Joseph.
  5. Say together, “God helps us forgive.”

Grain Sack Surprise

Materials: paper lunch bag, dry rice or cereal, spoon, small cup

  1. Place the small cup inside the bag.
  2. Spoon rice or cereal over the cup.
  3. Let children gently search for the hidden cup.
  4. Pretend to be surprised when it appears.
  5. Explain that Joseph used a cup to discover whether his brothers had changed.

Talk about it

  1. How did Joseph feel when he saw his brothers again?
  2. What brave choice did Judah make for Benjamin?
  3. Who can help us forgive when forgiving feels hard?

God, help us forgive, love others, and trust your good care.

Early Elementary

Ages 6–9

Objective

Children will explain how Joseph allowed time for change and then chose forgiveness and reconciliation.

Can a friendship become healthy again after someone has done something very wrong?

Tell the story

Read Genesis 42:1-45:28 together. During the famine, Joseph’s brothers traveled to Egypt for grain and bowed before him without recognizing him. Joseph tested them, and when his cup was found in Benjamin’s sack, Judah offered to become a slave in Benjamin’s place. Joseph saw that his brothers had changed, revealed himself with tears, comforted them, and sent wagons and food to bring Jacob’s household to Egypt.

Hands-on activities

Changed Choices Drama

Materials: small cup, paper bag, chair, scrap paper

  1. Choose children to play Joseph, Benjamin, Judah, and the other brothers.
  2. Place the cup in the paper bag.
  3. Act out the search and Benjamin’s discovery.
  4. Let Judah step forward and offer to take Benjamin’s place.
  5. Act out Joseph revealing his identity and welcoming his brothers.
  6. Discuss how Judah’s new choice differed from the brothers’ earlier treatment of Joseph.

Forgiveness Path Coloring Page

Materials: our free printable coloring page, crayons or colored pencils, pencil

  1. Color our free printable coloring page.
  2. Write “hurt” near one edge of the page.
  3. Write “forgiveness” near another edge.
  4. Draw a path between the words.
  5. Add choices along the path such as telling the truth, apologizing, listening, and showing kindness.

Talk about it

  1. Why do you think Joseph tested his brothers before revealing himself?
  2. What showed Joseph that Judah had changed?
  3. How can God bring something good from a situation people meant for harm?

Upper Elementary & Preteen

Ages 9–12

Objective

Children will distinguish forgiveness from instant trust and identify a wise step toward reconciliation in their own relationships.

Opening question

Is forgiving someone the same as immediately trusting that person again?

Tell the story

Read Genesis 42:1-45:28 together. Joseph recognized the brothers who had sold him, but he did not reveal himself immediately; instead, he tested whether they still treated a favored younger brother selfishly. When the cup was discovered in Benjamin’s sack, Judah courageously offered his own freedom to save Benjamin and spare Jacob further grief. Seeing their changed hearts, Joseph wept, identified himself, reassured them, and arranged food and transportation so the family could survive the famine.

Hands-on activities

Forgiveness and Trust Scenarios

Materials: scrap paper, pencils, two bowls

  1. Label one bowl “Forgiveness” and the other “Rebuilding Trust.”
  2. Write situations involving gossip, cheating, broken promises, or sincere apologies on separate papers.
  3. Read each situation aloud.
  4. Place each paper beside the bowl that represents the needed first step.
  5. Move papers between bowls when both responses are needed.
  6. Discuss safe actions such as setting boundaries, seeking help, watching for change, and refusing revenge.

  3. Write one sentence about Judah’s changed behavior.

  2. How did Judah demonstrate repentance through action rather than words alone?
