About Egyptian Granaries
The mudbrick storehouse complexes Joseph orders built across Egypt to store the surplus of the seven years of plenty against the seven years of famine that follow (Genesis 41). Egyptian granary compounds typically consisted of rows of conical or beehive-shaped silos enclosed by a wall, with a scribe at the door tallying every measure that went in or out — the bureaucracy that lets a centralized state ride out a famine.
