About Jericho
The ancient oasis city at the mouth of the wadi Qelt, about two hundred meters below sea level near the western bank of the Jordan — the lowest city on earth and one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements anywhere. Joshua's first conquest west of the river: the walls fall after seven days of marching and a great shout (Joshua 6). The Elijah-Elisha cycle visits Jericho twice in 2 Kings 2; centuries later Jesus passes through on his last journey up to Jerusalem, healing Bartimaeus and calling Zacchaeus down from the sycamore tree.
