Mount Sinai

The mountain in the Sinai wilderness — called Horeb in Deuteronomy and 1 Kings, Sinai in Exodus — where God appears to Moses in the burning bush, where Israel receives the law in fire and cloud, and where Elijah encounters the LORD in the still small voice after his flight from Jezebel. Tradition since at least the fourth century has identified Sinai with Jebel Musa in the south-central Sinai Peninsula, the seven-thousand-foot granite peak above the monastery of St Catherine; alternative proposals locate it in northwestern Arabia or the central Negev.
