Jonah

Jonah was a prophet from Israel who lived during the eighth century BCE, when Jeroboam II was king. He was the son of Amittai and came from Gath Hepher, a town near the Sea of Galilee. God told Jonah to travel east to Nineveh, the capital of the powerful Assyrian Empire. Jonah was to warn its people about their cruelty and wrongdoing. Instead, Jonah ran in the opposite direction. He boarded a ship at Joppa and tried to sail west toward Tarshish, far away from Nineveh.

The Book of Jonah, chapters 1 through 4, tells what happened. God sent a fierce storm that threatened to break the ship apart. The frightened sailors learned that Jonah was fleeing from God, and Jonah told them to throw him into the sea. When they did, the water became calm. God provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah remained inside it for three days and three nights. He prayed, and the fish released him onto dry land. Jonah then went to Nineveh and announced that judgment was coming. The people believed the warning. From the king to the poorest citizen, they turned away from evil, and God showed them mercy. Jonah became angry because Nineveh had been spared. Through a fast-growing plant, a worm, and a scorching wind, God taught Jonah that people mattered more than Jonah’s comfort.

Jonah’s story teaches children that running away does not place anyone beyond God’s reach. It also shows that prayer, repentance, and second chances are important. God cared for frightened sailors, a stubborn prophet, and even the people of a violent enemy city. Children can learn to obey God, admit when they are wrong, and show compassion to people they may not like. Nineveh stood beside the Tigris River, near the modern city of Mosul in Iraq. Jonah also appears in 2 Kings 14, where he had earlier delivered a message about Israel’s borders. Many years later, Assyria conquered the northern kingdom of Israel, which makes God’s concern for Nineveh especially striking.
