A mixed crowd of Assyrian merchants, workers, elders, children, and families in ankle-length wool and linen garments of muted cream, rust, indigo, and brown, many replacing fine clothes with rough goat-hair sackcloth; dark curled hair, beards, shawls, market baskets, work tools, and solemn, searching faces fill the streets.
