Preschool & Kindergarten

Ages 4–6

Objective

Children will know that Yahweh is the true God and that we can bravely follow him.

Tell the story

Read 1 Kings 18:16-46 together. Elijah stood before King Ahab, many prophets of Baal, and a large crowd on Mount Carmel. Baal did not answer his prophets, but Yahweh sent fire after Elijah prayed a short prayer. The people worshiped Yahweh, and later God sent rain to the dry land.

Hands-on activities

Build and Drench an Altar

Materials: Twelve small blocks or smooth stones, Shallow tray, Craft sticks, Small cup, Water, Towel

  1. Count twelve stones together.
  2. Build a small altar in the tray.
  3. Lay craft sticks across the top.
  4. Pour a little water over it three times.
  5. Pretend to be the crowd and say, “Yahweh, he is God!”
  6. Explain that this model cannot make fire, but God sent real fire on Mount Carmel.
  7. Dry the area together.

Fire and Rain Coloring

Materials: Our free printable coloring page, Crayons, Blue yarn or blue paper scraps, Glue

  1. Color our free printable coloring page.
  2. Use bright colors for the fire God sent.
  3. Glue blue yarn or paper below the clouds for rain.
  4. Point to Elijah and remember that he trusted God.
  5. Take the picture home and tell someone the story.

Talk about it

  1. Who answered Elijah’s prayer?
  2. Did Elijah need to shout for God to hear him?
  3. When can God help you be brave?

Early Elementary

Objective

Children will explain how Elijah courageously trusted the true God and choose one way to worship God wholeheartedly.

Tell the story

Read 1 Kings 18:16-46 together. On Mount Carmel, Elijah challenged the people to stop wavering and decide whether Yahweh or Baal was truly God. Baal’s 450 prophets called all day, but no one answered; Elijah rebuilt Yahweh’s altar, soaked it with water three times, and prayed. Yahweh sent fire that consumed everything, the people worshiped him, and heavy rain later ended the drought.

Hands-on activities

Mount Carmel Story Relay

Materials: Two bowls, Twelve blocks or stones, Craft sticks, Small cup, Blue paper scraps

  1. Place the materials across the room.
  2. Assign children the roles of Elijah, Ahab, the crowd, and the prophets of Baal.
  3. Carry twelve stones to build Elijah’s altar.
  4. Add craft sticks and place blue scraps around the altar as water.
  5. Act out Elijah’s short prayer without shouting.
  6. Raise both hands to represent fire falling.
  7. Crouch like the crowd and declare, “Yahweh, he is God!”
  8. Wave blue scraps overhead to represent the coming rain.

Tell the story

Read 1 Kings 18:16-46 together. Elijah confronted Ahab and challenged Israel to stop wavering between Yahweh and Baal. Although Baal’s 450 prophets spent the day shouting, leaping, and harming themselves, there was no answer; Elijah repaired Yahweh’s altar, drenched it with water, and prayed briefly. Yahweh’s fire consumed the offering, wood, stones, dust, and water, so the people acknowledged him as God; after Elijah prayed again, heavy rain came.

  1. Write situations involving gossip, cheating, exclusion, dishonest posts, or pressure to hide your faith.
  2. Fold the papers and place them in a bowl.

  6. Name one trusted adult who could help in that situation.
