Tell the story

Read Jonah 1:1-3:10 together. God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, but Jonah sailed the other way. God sent a storm, sailors put Jonah into the sea, and a great fish swallowed him; inside the fish, Jonah prayed. After three days, the fish put Jonah on land, Jonah obeyed, and God showed mercy when Nineveh turned from evil.

Hands-on activities

Storm, Fish, Shore Movement Story

Materials: A blanket or towel, Two chairs

  1. Place the chairs together as Jonah's boat.
  2. Rock side to side and make gentle storm sounds.
  3. Crouch under the blanket as Jonah inside the fish.
  4. Fold your hands and pretend to pray.
  5. Crawl out and walk toward an imaginary Nineveh.
  6. Say together, God gives second chances.

From Dark Sea to Dry Land Coloring

Materials: Our free printable coloring page, Crayons, A blue crayon or washable marker

  1. Look at our free printable coloring page together.
  2. Color the sea, fish, Jonah, and dry land.
  3. Point to Jonah and name the choice he made first.
  4. Circle the place where God gave Jonah another chance.
  5. Draw a path showing Jonah going to obey God.

Talk about it

  1. Which way did Jonah go when God told him to visit Nineveh?
  2. What did Jonah do inside the great fish?
  3. How did God give Jonah and Nineveh second chances?

Objective

Children will explain how Jonah received a second chance and how God's mercy reached Nineveh.

What might make someone run away from a difficult job?

Tell the story

Read Jonah 1:1-3:10 together. God sent Jonah to warn Nineveh, but Jonah boarded a ship going away from the city. During a fierce storm, the sailors learned Jonah was fleeing from God and reluctantly put him into the sea; the storm stopped, and a great fish swallowed Jonah. Jonah prayed, the fish delivered him onto land, and Jonah went to Nineveh, where the people and king repented and received God's mercy.

Hands-on activities

Obey or Run Story Relay

Materials: Two sheets of paper, Pencil, Tape

  1. Write Nineveh on one paper and Tarshish on the other.
  2. Tape the papers on opposite walls.
  3. Call out moments from Jonah's story.
  4. Move toward Tarshish when Jonah runs away.
  5. Move toward Nineveh when Jonah obeys.
  6. Freeze and pray when Jonah is inside the fish.
  7. Finish by saying, God's mercy is for everyone.

  1. Color our free printable coloring page.
  2. Find details showing Jonah's danger or rescue.
  3. Write one simple thought Jonah might have had while praying.
  4. Add a small arrow pointing toward Nineveh.

  1. Why do you think Jonah chose to sail away from God's command?
  2. What changed after Jonah prayed and obeyed?

Ages 9–12

Objective

Children will connect Jonah's reluctant obedience and Nineveh's repentance with God's mercy toward people they find difficult.

Opening question

Is it fair to show mercy to someone who has done something seriously wrong?

Tell the story

Read Jonah 1:1-3:10 together. Jonah fled toward Tarshish instead of warning wicked Nineveh, but a violent storm exposed his disobedience, and the sailors reluctantly put him into the sea. God provided a great fish, and Jonah prayed during three days and nights before being delivered onto dry land. Given another chance, Jonah preached in Nineveh, and when the king and people turned from evil, God saw their change and did not bring the announced disaster.

Materials: Scrap paper, Pencils, A bowl

  1. Write school or friendship conflicts on separate papers.
  2. Fold the papers and place them in a bowl.
  3. Draw one situation and read it aloud.
  4. Name a fair consequence for the wrong action.
  5. Name a merciful response that does not excuse the wrong.
  6. Explain how repentance could help rebuild trust.
  7. Repeat with another situation if time allows.
