Objective

Children will understand that the Holy Spirit helped Jesus’ followers tell everyone about Jesus.

Opening question

What does strong wind sound and feel like?

Tell the story

Read Acts 2:1-41 together. Jesus’ followers were together when a sound like a mighty wind filled the house. Little shapes like fire rested on them, and the Holy Spirit helped them speak languages they had not learned. People from many places heard about God, Peter spoke boldly about Jesus, and many people believed and were baptized.

Hands-on activities

Rushing Wind Play

Materials: Paper, Crayons, A small towel or sheet

  1. Draw simple faces on several pieces of paper.
  2. Place the papers on the floor.
  3. Wave the towel above them to make rushing air.
  4. Let the children move like robes blowing in strong wind.
  5. Freeze and point upward when you say, “The Holy Spirit came.”
  6. Explain that the Spirit was invisible, but the people heard and saw what he did.

  1. Give each child our free printable coloring page.
  2. Find the followers gathered together.
  3. Color the shapes like fire without drawing a large burning blaze.
  4. Color people in many different ways to remember that God’s good news is for everyone.
  5. Say together, “The Holy Spirit helped them speak.”

Talk about it

  1. Who came to help Jesus’ followers?
  2. What did the people hear in their own languages?
  3. Who can we tell about Jesus?

Early Elementary

Ages 6–9

Objective

Children will explain how the Holy Spirit united Jesus’ followers and helped them speak boldly to people from many nations.

Opening question

How would you feel if someone suddenly spoke your language far from home?

Tell the story

Read Acts 2:1-41 together. While Jesus’ followers were gathered, a sound like a mighty wind filled the house, shapes like fire appeared, and the Holy Spirit enabled them to speak other languages. Visitors from many nations heard the mighty works of God in their own languages. Peter boldly explained that Jesus had risen, and about three thousand people received his message and were baptized.

Hands-on activities

One Message Language Game

Materials: Small pieces of paper, Pencils, A bowl

  1. Write simple greetings such as hello, welcome, and peace on separate papers.
  2. Fold the papers and place them in a bowl.
  3. Let each child choose and read one message using a silly voice or rhythm.
  4. Have everyone repeat the message clearly together.
  5. Explain that Pentecost involved real languages given by the Spirit, not silly speech.
  6. Say that God wanted people from many places to understand his mighty works.

Many People, One Church

Materials: Our free printable coloring page, Crayons or colored pencils, One sheet of plain paper, Tape

  1. Color our free printable coloring page.
  2. Notice the disciples and the gathered crowd.
  3. Draw several different faces around the edge of the plain paper.
  4. Write “God’s good news is for everyone” in the center.
  5. Tape the coloring page beside the group drawing.
  6. Explain that the Church is God’s gathered people, not merely a building.

Talk about it

  1. Why were the visitors amazed when the disciples spoke?
  2. What gave Peter courage to stand and preach?
  3. How can people who are different follow Jesus together?

Upper Elementary & Preteen

Ages 9–12

Objective

Children will connect the Holy Spirit’s work at Pentecost with courage, unity, personal change, and sharing Jesus across differences.

Opening question

What might help you speak up when you feel afraid or embarrassed?

Tell the story

Read Acts 2:1-41 together. The Holy Spirit filled Jesus’ gathered followers, and people from many nations heard God’s mighty works in their own languages. Peter, who had once denied knowing Jesus, now stood with the other apostles and boldly announced Jesus’ resurrection. The listeners asked what to do, Peter called them to repent and be baptized, and about three thousand people joined the believers.

  1. Write school situations on papers, such as welcoming a newcomer, stopping gossip, admitting a mistake, or explaining your faith.
  2. Fold the papers and place them in a bowl.
  3. Choose one card at a time.
  4. Act out an unhelpful response and then a courageous response.
  5. Name what fear might make speaking difficult.
  6. Discuss how the Holy Spirit can help believers act with truth, love, and courage.
