Objective

Children will understand that God used Ruth’s loyal love and Boaz’s kindness to care for Naomi.

Opening question

How can you help someone who feels sad or alone?

Tell the story

Naomi was very sad because her husband and sons had died. Ruth stayed with Naomi and went with her to Bethlehem, saying, “Where you go, I will go.” Ruth gathered grain left in Boaz’s field, and Boaz kindly made sure she had plenty. Boaz married Ruth, and God made their family part of King David’s family.

Hands-on activities

Gather the Grain

Materials: Scraps of yellow paper, A bowl or small basket, A blanket or towel

  1. Read Ruth 1:1-4:22 together.
  2. Scatter the paper grain around the room.
  3. Let children bend down and gather it into the basket.
  4. Place a few extra pieces near each child as Boaz did for Ruth.
  5. Share one kind action you can do this week.

Color and Find Kindness

  3. Point to a person who showed loyalty.
  4. Circle something that reminds you of God’s care.

Objective

Tell the story

After Naomi’s husband and sons died in Moab, she decided to return to Bethlehem. Ruth loyally went with her, even though Ruth was a foreigner beginning life in a new place. Ruth gathered leftover barley in Boaz’s field, and Boaz protected her, fed her, and told his workers to leave extra grain. As a family redeemer, Boaz married Ruth, and their son Obed became the grandfather of King David.

  1. Read Ruth 1:1-4:22 together.
  2. Write a simple act of kindness on each paper.
  3. Scatter the papers like grain.
  4. Take turns gathering one paper at a time.

Tell the story

Naomi returned from Moab grieving her husband and sons, but Ruth chose to leave her homeland and remain with her. In Bethlehem, Ruth worked by gleaning, while Boaz used his authority to provide safety, food, and extra grain without humiliating her. Ruth asked Boaz to act as a family redeemer, and Boaz followed the proper process with the nearer relative and the city elders before marrying her. Their son Obed became David’s grandfather, placing Ruth, a Moabite woman, in the family line that led to Jesus.
