Coming soonAbout this story
A famine drives a Hebrew family from Bethlehem to Moab. The father dies. The two sons marry Moabite women. Then the sons die too, leaving the mother Naomi and her foreign daughters-in-law as widows in a strange land. Naomi decides to go home. She tells the young women to stay with their families. Orpah turns back. But Ruth speaks the loyalest words in the Old Testament: "Where you go, I will go." Back in Bethlehem, Ruth gleans grain in the field of a kind landowner named Boaz. He is a relative of Naomi''s — a possible "kinsman-redeemer," someone who can rescue the family by marrying the widow and continuing the line. The story moves through harvest and threshing floor to a quiet, joyful wedding. Their son Obed becomes the grandfather of King David, and Ruth — a foreigner — enters the family tree of Jesus.
